The Niagara Region of Southern Ontario is one of Canada’s most popular tourist regions, with Niagara Falls, Niagara-on-the Lake, many wineries, orchards, and charming farm stands, and abundant waterways and resources, including two Great Lakes, the Welland Canal, and the Niagara River. Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation and the Region of Niagara’s Transportation Department jointly funded the Niagara Regional Bicycling Study to improve conditions for both touring and recreational cycling and bicycle commuting in the region. The proposed Regional Bicycling Network was developed through a series of three public workshops. The first workshop identified origins, destinations, attractions and barriers to cycling in the region. At the second, potential on-road and off-road bikeways were mapped. A preferred bicycling network was presented at the third workshop for discussion and review. Bicycling-related policies related to engineering, education, enforcement and encouragement were developed and recommended for adoption. |
