The Rochester region has an impressive network of multi-use and hiking trails that is highly valued by the community. These trails include the Canalway Trail along historic Erie Canal and the Genesee Riverway and Genessee Valley Greenway along the Genesee River. The purpose of the Regional Trails Initiative was to develop a comprehensive and achievable action plan to enhance and expand this trail network so that it constitutes a nationally recognized distinguishing feature of the region.

R,S & E Trail in Perinton.
The Regional Trails Initiative - Phase 1 focused on the Rochester Transportation Management Area including all of Monroe County and adjacent, more densely-developed sections of Livingston, Ontario, and Wayne Counties. Working closely with GTC staff, a Project Steering Committee, and the public, the consultant team conducted a needs assessment, produced trail design guidelines, and developed near, mid, and long-term trail network implemetation plans. Final recommendations included cost estimates for trail development, cost information on trail operations and maintenance, and funding sources and strategies. Phase 2 of the study looked at trail development in GTC’s full nine county region and focused on areas outside of the Transportation Management Area.
RMLA was a subconsultant to Alta Planning & Design for Phase 1 and to Clark Patterson Associates for Phase 2. The Genesee Transportation Council was the client for both phases of the study. Phase 1 was completed in 2002 and phase 2 in 2004.
